Variety is the spice of life or so they say. Variety can also make a huge difference when you’re attempting to eat healthy. The same green smoothie every morning can get monotonous if you don’t mix it up once in awhile.

Have you tried using figs in your smoothies lately? Figs can add a unique flavor and texture to a variety of foods including a green smoothie. Not only are figs delicious, but they are good source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, copper, potassium, manganese, and pantothenic acid.

I know what you are thinking, how can you find fresh figs in the middle of winter? Well lucky for me, my local Trader Joe’s grocery store now carries frozen figs in the frozen fruit section.

For those of you that don’t live near a Trader Joe’s you can easily use dried figs. Just remove the stems and put them in a high speed blender such as the Vitamix with your other smoothie ingredients.

If you don’t have a high speed blender you can soak them for at least an hour beforehand to make them soft. You can also use the fig soak water which will be nice and sweet. Just make sure your dried figs are organic with no preservatives!

Mangos are another fruit I encourage you to eat more of! Mangos, either fresh or frozen are great in green smoothie recipes as they add a creamy consistency when blended much like a banana, and they add a sweet and tangy flavor. Mangos are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin A and vitamin C.
